South Sudan, a nation that seceded and declared its independence from the country of Sudan in 2011, soon found itself thrust into a brutal civil war. The fighting began a mere 18 months after the formation of the nation, leading to insecurity within the populace that was soon punctuated by rampant famine, overcrowding, and outbreaks of serious medical conditions like measles and cholera.
